Maintenance team constructing protective canopy over headworks electrical panel

New Update: Wastewater Wednesdays!

Last week, we shared two important milestones at the Mainland Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility. A new backup generator arrived on site to strengthen reliability, and the facility successfully completed its first round of solids dewatering as startup and operational readiness efforts continued.

This week, progress is visible throughout the facility. Behind the scenes, our maintenance team is constructing a protective canopy over the headworks electrical panels to help safeguard critical equipment from the elements. While it may seem like a small detail, these types of improvements play an important role in supporting long-term reliability and ensuring the systems our community depends on are protected for years to come.

The facility is also providing a remarkable glimpse into the wastewater treatment process as operations continue to advance. Team members can now observe the journey from the raw wastewater entering the plant, through the settling process where solids naturally separate from liquids, to the crystal-clear treated effluent the new facility is already producing during startup. It is a powerful visual reminder of the work taking place every day to transform what enters the system into highly treated water through a carefully managed process. As additional flows are introduced over the coming year, teams will remain focused on optimization and continuous improvement while building on the progress already achieved during these early stages of operation.

Beyond the facility itself, work continues on the infrastructure that will help move wastewater efficiently through the system and support the transition to the Mainland Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility. Beginning this week, paving activities are scheduled along A.E. Backus Avenue as part of ongoing conveyance improvements. Residents and motorists may notice construction crews and flaggers in the area assisting with traffic flow to help keep both workers and the public safe during these activities. We appreciate the community's patience and encourage drivers to use caution and follow posted directions while traveling through the work zone. While paving may seem like a routine part of the project, it marks another important step toward building a more resilient and dependable wastewater system for the future.

From startup activities at the new facility to improvements taking place throughout the community, each milestone reflects FPUA's continued commitment to reliable wastewater service, environmental stewardship, and building a stronger, more resilient future for Fort Pierce.

Also, we’d like to thank all of our partners, contractors, vendors, and crew who are helping us deliver this important project to our customers! FPUA is grateful for this project with industry leaders Globaltech, Inc., Haskell and Hazen, the site designers and build team; TLC Diversified, Inc., re-routing the conveyance system to redirect wastewater flows away from the Indian River Lagoon; Kimley-Horn, the conveyance system designers, and the sub-contractors working so hard to keep this project safe and on schedule.

We are also thankful for the partnership with the City of Fort Pierce in this infrastructure improvement effort that will benefit the Fort Pierce community for generations to come.
