WRF begins treating 20% of FPUA’s total system flows

New Update: Wastewater Wednesdays!

Last week, we shared that FPUA’s Mainland Water Reclamation Facility project continues to receive national recognition following its 2025 Utility of the Future Award in the Water Reuse category. The Water Environment Federation also featured the project in its Circular Water Economy case study series and national interactive map, recognizing FPUA’s commitment to resiliency, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.

This week, the new WRF officially began treating approximately 20% of FPUA’s total system flows using the state-of-the-art AquaNereda® treatment process. The reactors are now active during their aeration phase, and recent panoramic views of the headworks, EQ tank, and chlorine contact chambers continue to show how far the project has come.

Crews are also continuing work on final items as the facility moves closer to final completion this summer.

On the conveyance side, crews have completed construction and pressure testing of the new 16-inch force main that will help redirect wastewater flows to the new Mainland Water Reclamation Facility as part of FPUA’s larger wastewater system improvements. Road restoration work is also complete, and North 7th Street from Avenue B to Avenue C has reopened to the public.

Also, we’d like to thank all of our partners, contractors, vendors, and crew who are helping us deliver this important project to our customers! FPUA is grateful for this project with industry leaders Globaltech, Inc., Haskell and Hazen, the site designers and build team; TLC Diversified, Inc., re-routing the conveyance system to redirect wastewater flows away from the Indian River Lagoon; Kimley-Horn, the conveyance system designers, and the sub-contractors working so hard to keep this project safe and on schedule.

We are also thankful for the partnership with the City of Fort Pierce in this infrastructure improvement effort that will benefit the Fort Pierce community for generations to come.
