Award from FDEP recognizes excellence in operation

New Update: Wastewater Wednesdays!

Last month, we shared that FPUA's Mainland Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility received the 2025 Water and Wastewater Plant Operations Excellence Award from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).

This week, FDEP representatives visited the facility to formally present the award, meet with FPUA staff, and learn more about the progress being made since operations began earlier this year.

Presented in the Type I Domestic Wastewater Facility category, the award recognizes excellence in operation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance at facilities with a permitted capacity of 500,000 gallons per day or greater.

This recognition is especially meaningful as the facility continues moving into full operation. The Mainland Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility is currently receiving and treating approximately 1 million gallons of wastewater per day, representing about 20 percent of the flows that will ultimately be transitioned to the site. This progress reflects years of planning, construction, and coordination to strengthen FPUA's wastewater system for the future.

As operations continue to expand, the facility is helping advance FPUA's long-term effort to relocate wastewater treatment operations from South Hutchinson Island to a more resilient inland location. The project supports environmental protection, future water reuse opportunities, and critical infrastructure investments that will benefit the community for decades to come.

We appreciate the FDEP team for taking the time to visit Fort Pierce and present this recognition in person. Their visit provided an opportunity to highlight the progress being made at the facility and the dedication of the employees who help operate it each day.

FPUA remains committed to transparency, community engagement, and keeping the public informed as this important project continues to serve our community and shape a more resilient future.
