FPUA awarded $5 million in state funding for plant relocation

Wastewater Wednesday Spotlight!

Fort Pierce Utilities Authority is proud to share that we have been awarded $5 million in state funding to support the relocation of our wastewater treatment plant. This funding, secured with the support of Governor Ron DeSantis, Senator Erin Grall, and Representative State Representative Dana Trabulsy, represents a major step forward in our efforts to modernize essential infrastructure, protect the Indian River Lagoon, and improve long-term service reliability for our community.

The current facility, located on South Hutchinson Island, is more than 40 years old and increasingly vulnerable to sea level rise and storm impacts. The new facility will be built approximately five miles inland, adjacent to the Treasure Coast Energy Center, allowing FPUA to reduce environmental risks while increasing operational efficiency.

The relocation project will:

• Replace aging infrastructure with advanced AquaNereda® treatment technology

• Improve environmental resilience and protect sensitive coastal ecosystems

• Reduce long-term operating costs and support rate stability for our customers

• Provide reclaimed water to the Florida Municipal Power Agency’s cooling towers,    conserving groundwater and promoting resource sustainability

In a separate effort to support the health of our local ecosystems, Sea & Shoreline recently performed a benthic resource survey at several potential seagrass restoration sites near the existing wastewater treatment plant. The goal of the survey is to identify the most suitable location for seagrass planting based on current site conditions and ecological value. The findings will guide future restoration planning and strengthen our commitment to the Indian River Lagoon’s recovery.

FPUA remains focused on building a more sustainable future through responsible planning, innovative solutions, and meaningful environmental partnerships.
