FPUA’s commitment to transparency

Wastewater Wednesday: From Treatment to Transparency

This week, we’re highlighting another important part of the treatment process at FPUA’s new Water Reclamation Facility.

Once wastewater has been fully treated, the effluent flows through the chlorine contact chamber, where it is disinfected and maintained at the proper chlorine residual for use in the facility’s restricted process water system. The disinfected water is then stored in the ground storage tank, which will support a combination of future industrial and public reuse customers as the facility reaches full flow. By putting highly treated water to beneficial use, FPUA is helping protect valuable water resources while supporting the community’s long-term needs.

Construction is also moving forward. Materials have arrived for the new equipment storage canopy, the final structure planned for the site. Slab work is expected to begin in the coming weeks, followed by installation of the support beams and roof.

FPUA’s commitment to transparency was also highlighted this week at WEFTEC 2026, the Water Environment Federation’s annual water industry conference. Director of Public Affairs & Sustainability Rachel Tennant presented “Public Trust: The Missing Input in Infrastructure Finance,” sharing FPUA’s experience with the WRF relocation and the importance of clear communication, grant updates, facility tours, and initiatives like Wastewater Wednesdays in helping the public understand major infrastructure investments.

At FPUA, transparency, communication, and community engagement remain central to how we serve Fort Pierce.

That commitment continues as we kick off Public Utilities Week! Join us at Marina Square on Friday, October 2, from 5:30–8:30 p.m. Stop by the FPUA booths, meet members of our team, and learn more about the essential services that keep our community running every day.
