State Representative Trabulsy Visits Lift Station A to See Project Progress and Recognize State Funding
This Wastewater Wednesday, FPUA welcomed Florida State Representative Dana Trabulsy to Lift Station A for a firsthand look at construction progress and to recognize the $2.5 million appropriation included in Florida's Fiscal Year 2026–27 state budget.
The funding supports Phase 2 of FPUA's Sewer Treatment Plant Relocation Project, including improvements to the pipelines, lift stations, and booster stations needed to redirect wastewater flows from South Hutchinson Island to the new mainland Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility, approximately five miles inland.
Each year, local governments and public utilities can request state funding for projects that address important community needs. At FPUA, securing this funding began well before the last legislative session. Our teams worked to identify the infrastructure improvements needed for Phase 2, developed project plans, and prepared a funding request outlining the benefits for our customers, community, and the Indian River Lagoon.
We also gathered letters of support from local organizations, community partners, and residents to help demonstrate the importance of this investment.
FPUA then worked with our state legislative delegation to bring the request forward during Florida's annual budget process. The $2.5 million appropriation was included in the budget approved by the Florida Legislature and signed by Governor Ron DeSantis.
We are grateful to Governor DeSantis State of Florida for approving the funding and to State Senator Erin Grall for Florida and State Representative Dana Trabulsy for their continued support of this important infrastructure project. We also appreciate the community members and organizations whose support helped make the case for this investment.
This year's appropriation builds on previous state investments and will help advance major conveyance improvement projects throughout FPUA's wastewater service area.
During the visit, FPUA Director of Utilities Javier Cisneros, Director of Water & Wastewater Systems Bo Hutchinson, Director of Public Affairs & Sustainability, Rachel Tennant and Supervising Engineer Lugey Dawson walked Representative Trabulsy through the active construction site at Lift Station A.
The team explained how lift stations help pump wastewater through the collection system and why improvements to this station are essential to the relocation project. Lift Station A currently helps move wastewater toward the existing treatment facility on South Hutchinson Island. Once the upgrades are complete, the station will be reconfigured to reverse the direction of wastewater flow, sending it west toward the new mainland Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility on Energy Lane.
Of course, progress on a project of this scale takes a dedicated team. We're grateful to the partners, contractors, vendors, and crews helping bring it to life, including Globaltech, Inc., Haskell, and Hazen on the mainland facility; TLC Diversified, Inc. and Kimley-Horn on the conveyance system; and the many subcontractors supporting construction. We also thank the City of Fort Pierce for its continued partnership.
Together, these efforts are helping FPUA build a more resilient wastewater system, reduce potential environmental risks to the Indian River Lagoon, and serve Fort Pierce for generations to come.
