U.S. EPA Visits FPUA Water Reclamation & Reuse Facility to Recognize $1 Million Investment in Wastewater Infrastructure Improvements

This Wastewater Wednesday, we're highlighting a special visit to FPUA's mainland Water Reclamation & Reuse Facility!

On Tuesday, October 27, we welcomed representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and federal and local leaders to recognize $1 million in federal Community Project Funding supporting FPUA's ongoing wastewater infrastructure improvements.

The event featured remarks from Javier Cisneros, P.E., FPUA Chief Executive Officer and Director of Utilities; Lugey Dawson, P.E., FPUA Supervising Engineer; City of Fort Pierce Mayor Linda Hudson; U.S. Representative Brian Mast, representing Florida's 21st Congressional District; and Kevin J. McOmber, P.E., Regional Administrator for EPA Region 4.

The grant funding will support Project 4.2, the Glenview Force Main Improvements, an important part of Phase 2 of FPUA's Sewer Plant Relocation Project.

Project 4.2 includes the installation of approximately 900 feet of new 24-inch wastewater pipeline and related infrastructure connecting Lift Station F to the existing force main along Glenview Avenue. This connection will help redirect wastewater flows from South Hutchinson Island to the new mainland treatment facility, supporting FPUA's efforts to relocate wastewater treatment operations away from the Indian River Lagoon.

The project is one of 17 conveyance projects included in Phase 2. Together, these improvements will create the network needed to transport wastewater to the new Water Reclamation & Reuse Facility.

During the program, EPA representatives also presented FPUA with a commemorative certificate recognizing the $1 million federal funding award.

We were pleased to share this occasion with additional EPA team members, members of FPUA's Utility Advisory Committee, local representatives, and members of our community who joined us to recognize this important investment.

Construction of the new Mainland Water Reclamation & Reuse Facility was completed in 2026, and work continues on Phase 2 to build the pipelines, lift stations, and related infrastructure needed to transition wastewater treatment operations away from South Hutchinson Island.

We're grateful to the EPA for administering this federal funding, Congressman Mast for his support in securing the investment, and our state and local partners for their continued support of FPUA's wastewater infrastructure improvements.

It was exciting to recognize this milestone alongside so many individuals who are invested in Fort Pierce's future. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the occasion so meaningful!
