Highlights of important operational work happening at the facility

New Update: Wastewater Wednesday!

Last week, we celebrated the Mainland Water Reclamation Facility receiving the ABC Florida East Coast Chapter Excellence in Construction Award, recognizing the teamwork and commitment behind this major investment in FPUA’s wastewater system.

This week, we’re highlighting some of the important operational work happening throughout the facility.

Our contracted dewatering partner is currently draining concentrated sludge holding tanks as part of the MWRF’s solids residual and dewatering process. Maintaining the proper balance of microorganisms is essential to effective wastewater treatment. During dewatering, excess water is removed to create a dry sludge cake, which is then transported offsite for additional treatment through composting before being used for land application or fertilizer production.

Electrical contractors are also making steady progress on wiring the plant’s standby generator, with final startup and testing expected to begin in the coming weeks. The generator is designed to support the entire treatment process during power interruptions, helping prevent plant upsets while also supporting wastewater field operations during tropical storms and other emergencies.

Beyond the work visible onsite, planning, design, and coordination continue across several supporting wastewater infrastructure projects. Teams are advancing engineering, permitting, utility coordination, and construction planning for improvements that will strengthen connections to the new facility and support long-term system reliability. These efforts are helping prepare FPUA’s wastewater system for future growth while improving operational flexibility, resilience, and service to the community.

Also, we’d like to thank all of our partners, contractors, vendors, and crew who are helping us deliver this important project to our customers! FPUA is grateful for this project with industry leaders Globaltech, Inc., Haskell and Hazen, the site designers and build team; TLC Diversified, Inc., re-routing the conveyance system to redirect wastewater flows away from the Indian River Lagoon; Kimley-Horn, the conveyance system designers, and the sub-contractors working so hard to keep this project safe and on schedule.

We are also thankful for the partnership with the City of Fort Pierce in this infrastructure improvement effort that will benefit the Fort Pierce community for generations to come.
