New Update: Wastewater Wednesday!
Last week, we highlighted plant staff’s work to optimize sludge wasting and biosolids dewatering, helping maintain stable treatment and produce high-quality reuse water. We also introduced the planned 2,500-linear-foot Jenkins Force Main Extension from Edwards Road to Ten Mile Creek, with construction anticipated to begin within the next month. That project, together with other conveyance improvements advancing through design and permitting, will help prepare the network to carry wastewater flows to the Mainland Water Reclamation Facility.
This week’s photos highlight equipment supporting the AquaNereda basins and the formation of the sludge granules at the heart of the treatment process. Hybrid air blowers maintain proper dissolved oxygen levels, while the air header and process piping support the water-level correction and sludge-wasting phases of each treatment cycle.
Precision instruments monitor dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrate, and pH, providing the automated control system with real-time information to optimize treatment. Sludge thickener tanks concentrate waste solids before dewatering.
Conveyance work also continues at Lift Station A, FPUA’s primary wastewater lift station serving downtown Fort Pierce. The station is being reconfigured to reverse the direction of wastewater flow so it can be conveyed from the downtown area toward the new Mainland Water Reclamation Facility. The contractor continues welding durable, leak-resistant HDPE force main pipe and fittings that will form part of the station’s discharge system.
Across the broader conveyance program, FPUA staff continue coordinating design, permitting, construction activities, technical requirements, and project sequencing to keep multiple interconnected projects moving smoothly. Together, these efforts will complete the network needed to redirect wastewater flows from across FPUA’s service area to the new Mainland Water Reclamation Facility.
Also, we’d like to thank all of our partners, contractors, vendors, and crew who are helping us deliver this important project to our customers! FPUA is grateful for this project with industry leaders Globaltech, Inc., Haskell and Hazen, the site designers and build team; TLC Diversified, Inc., re-routing the conveyance system to redirect wastewater flows away from the Indian River Lagoon; Kimley-Horn, the conveyance system designers, and the sub-contractors working so hard to keep this project safe and on schedule.
We are also thankful for the partnership with the City of Fort Pierce in this infrastructure improvement effort that will benefit the Fort Pierce community for generations to come.
