FPUA celebrating progress on two important advancements

Wastewater Wednesday: Building for the Future, Opening Doors for the Community

This week, FPUA is celebrating progress on two fronts: advancing the infrastructure that will carry our wastewater system into the future and creating new opportunities for the community to connect with that work.

At its September 1 meeting, the FPUA Board approved moving forward with the design of four additional Phase 1B conveyance projects. These improvements will support the continued redirection of wastewater flows to the new Water Reclamation Facility while strengthening the capacity and long-term reliability of FPUA’s conveyance network.

The Board also approved the commencement of construction for CIP 2.2B, the Ten Mile Creek to WRRF Force Main Extension. The project will continue the 30-inch force main south from the Jenkins Road right of way, include a directional drill crossing of Ten Mile Creek and the George LeStrange Preserve, complete two jack-and-bore FEC railroad crossings, and connect to the WRRF headworks.

The new Water Reclamation Facility also became a place for learning and connection this week as FPUA hosted its 3rd annual Youth Career Event on site.

The event is designed to introduce young people to the wide range of careers available in the utility industry while connecting them with educational resources, workforce opportunities, and professionals who can help them prepare for their next steps. Hosting the event at the new facility gave us the opportunity to go beyond talking about utility careers. Attendees were also offered guided tours, giving them a firsthand look at the facility and a better understanding of the people, technology, and infrastructure behind wastewater service.

We are proud to see this new facility serve not only as a major investment in FPUA’s wastewater future, but also as a resource for education, workforce development, and community engagement.

A special thank you to IRSC Advising and Career Services for leading the resume-building workshop, and to CareerSource Research Coast, UF IFAS Extension St. Lucie County, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County for engaging with attendees through educational and career resource tables.

We are also grateful to the many FPUA staff members who shared their time, expertise, and support to help create a meaningful experience for the next generation of utility professionals.
